The Magic Square

I've always thought of a Magic Square as a square made up of smaller squares, where there's a number in each small square and each column and each row adds up to the same number. That's why I went for Su Doku as the answer to this question – because a Su Doku is a lot more like a Magic Square than a crossword puzzle. (For me it was an either/or question – it had to be either Su Doku or crosswords.)

Wikipedia agrees with me about what a Magic Square is. It has no mention of Magic Squares on its Crossword page, and no mention of crosswords on its Magic Square page. On googling "magic square crossword", the closest I could find was this page, which mentions the New York Times crossword but seems to be about a puzzle in something called Games Magazine (an American publication, presumably) which looks like a crossword but has the one–off title 'Magic Square'.

I remain to be convinced about crosswords originating in anything called The Magic Square.
